Is this the case, is DIY fusion a true fusion option nowadays or am I better off with option 2 below?Ģ.) Install the SSD and set it up as a separate boot/OS drive and use the HDD as a seperate cold storage for my media files. This sounds good to me, but I've seen conflicting opinions on whether this actually creates a true "fusion" drive where most-used data is moved between slow/fast storage as needed or just makes it a set of logical partitions where it would simply fill up the SSD and then start to fill up the HDD as overflow. I do have a separate 640GB external drive with a fresh Time Machine backup of the whole thing.ġ.) Install the SSD and create a fusion drive in Recovery. Some combination of the two will be required. I currently have about 280GB used on the HDD, mostly RAW photo and HD video, so just Time Machine restoring all of that to the 256GB boot SSD drive is out. I see a few posts seaching here and on Google that recommend a few different options, but I'm unclear on what would be best for my situation. I'm solid on the install process, but I'm wondering how I should approach data migration and if anything has changed in the last couple of years. It's slowed quite a bit since the Yosemite upgrade, so I've ordered a Crucial Mx100 256GB SSD and the OWC data-doubler kit. This is my home photo/video proofing machine. I have a late-2012 Mac Mini (i5, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD) running Yosemite.
